UFRN Symphony draws musicians from three continents for concert this Saturday
The third concert of the 2016 season of the UFRN Symphony Orchestra features musicians from three continents. This is part of the “Winter Festival of the UFRN Music School (EMUFRN)”. The event is this Saturday (27th), at 8pm, at EMUFRN with free entry.
The Sinfônica da UFRN gives continuity to its project of bringing international high performance music to the public of the state. The orchestra faces the world premiere of the work for piano and orchestra “On Canaan's Border” by the American composer James Lee III, who had Durval Cesetti as soloist or professor at EMUFRN.
Another highlight, this time of a work never before performed in South America, is “Rhapfest” by Xu Changjun of the Tianjin Conservatory of Music, China. This night we also have the international command of the Spanish maestro, Juan Pablo Gómez.
A little more about the attractions
Maestro Juan Pablo Gómes is the principal conductor and founder of the “Orquestra Filarmônica Partiture”. The beginning of his career is early. He began his career as an orchestra conductor at the age of 17. From now on, the Spanish maestro accumulates awards and honorable mentions in competitions such as the “First Prize of the International Contest of Conducting of Young Orchestra Conductors”, organized by the “Dinu Lipatti” music school in Bucharest (1998). The most recent award is the “Special Orchestra Prize” at the II Kisiniev International Orchestral Conducting Competition in 2011.
Xu Changjun is a percussionist and composer. He trained at the Anhui Academy of Arts. He is the teacher of the “Xangai Conservatory of Music” and the teacher of the “Central Conservatory of Music” of Pequim. This PhD on Luciano Berio's “13 Sequências” received the “elite” award from the Chinese Ministry of Education and was published by the “Music Conservatory” of Shanghai. The Chinese musician also studies the “Conservatorio della Musica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi” in Italy. He was vice-president of the “Central Conservatory of Music” of the city of Pequim and is currently the president of the “Tianjin Conservatory of Music”.
The composer James Lee III is American and his works have been performed by numerous internationally renowned performers, such as the masters Michael Tilson Thomas, Leonard Slatkin and Marin Alsop. He is a professor at “Morgan University (Baltimore-USA)” and a professor at the “University of Michigan”, also an American university. The compositions frequently have evocative titles that represent religious ideas, at the same time philosophical. North American music combines compositional techniques and bold ideas, through a sensibility of great emotional power. According to critics, only these elements make the work have great penetration with the public. The Washington Post praised James Lee III for his “pure and brilliant music,” or the Baltimore Sun described it as “vibrant and rich in layers,” and the South Florida Classical Review was impressed by its being “tonal but also possessing great complexity.”
